Trips to Malawi
Our trip in June 2008 was very successful and rewarding. We were able to help out in so many ways. We travelled with a team of 7 this year. Joining us were Clint, his son Sydney, Lily, Carrie and Laura. We had a wonderful time and built ever-lasting friendships.
In Malawi we handed out Bags of Hope, Maize to 10 different villages and countless pairs of underwear, notebooks and pencils. We were also able to help retrofit two schools, we left money to feed an AIDS group, helped feed preschool children in 7 schools for a few months, and left money to start another preschool in the very remote village of Chikulo. Chikulo is one of the poorest areas in Malawi. The people live there in extreme poverty. We concentrated 1/3 of our trip to spending time with the people there and assessing their needs. In the end we helped start the preschool as well as we left enough money to begin building a medical clinic there. The closest clinic is too far to travel to by foot and people are left without any kind of medical attention. We were so happy to be able to help.
Chikulo has become very near and dear to both Jaako’s and my heart. We love the people there and want to continue to help them build a self-sustaining village where all their basic needs can me met. We have partnered with good friends Traci and Mick who live in Malawi – and together with them we will strive to make Chikulo a better place to live. Please help Chikulo. If you could only see how they live. My heart breaks for this community of people. They are a truly amazing village. Although they struggle daily to just eat and stay warm (in the cold season) they are very friendly and happy. They embraced us with all the love they had in their hearts and accepted us fully into their midst.
We had a wonderful trip and are planning to return in August 2010.
